You & Your Brain

Most of us know that we need to look after our bodies. Whether we do that or not is another story but we know the theory and that it’s a necessary part of being healthy. However not many of us actually take care of our minds. There is a lot of talk about mental health and mental health awareness but to be honest I don’t feel that they (the media) are hitting the right buttons. There is a lot of lip service paid to it without actively giving people the tools to help themselves.

As part of RTT training we understand that eg depression and anxiety, two of the most common mental health issues, can be caused by faulty beliefs and repetitive negative messaging which we deliver to our brains.

Depression eg is often caused by incessant negative self talk, disconnection from others and failing to follow your heart’s desire.

If we are constantly talking to ourselves in a negative manner then we are bound to feel depressed and stuck in a rut. We therefore make ourselves go round and round in circles with negative critical and harsh words to ourselves which in turn makes us feel inadequate and not enough, when then in turn means we won’t perform at our best and so starting the cycle of harsh critical self talk again. It becomes a loop of thoughts to feelings to actions and back to thoughts again.

Eg. Thought: I am just not good enough to apply for that job. Feeling: I am just a hopeless case and feel so down about myself.

Action: I don’t apply for the job and stay in the same situation. Thought: I am just not good enough and will never get anywhere.

This is an example of a simple looping negative thought which is profoundly destructive to our well-being.

How many of us have that self-awareness to note these negative thoughts and what they are doing to us? If you heard your friend talking about herself in this manner, no doubt you would stop her in her tracks and tell her she has lots of experience and should apply for the job because she will be as good if not better than many others who would just put themselves forward for the job.

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to :

  1. Become aware of those negative critical thoughts that we pay attention to and

  2. Start to change that cycle and speak more kindly to yourself and think more kindly about yourself. This takes time to practice. However it is very worth it.

Other general self-talk reasons behind depression/anxiety are :

I am not good enough

I am not good enough, smart enough, clever enough, attractive enough, interesting enough, rich enough, motivated enough …….. The list is endless

It’s not available to someone like me

I want love but can’t find it

I want to be healthy but our family only have to see a cake to put on weight

I want to be happy but I’ve got the depressed gene – it runs in my family

I feel different

I’m different from everyone else.

No one likes people like me.

No one understands my point of view

Our brains like what is familiar so if you are thinking in a negative way, then this will be the default position and it will always bring you back to negative thinking. Therefore, you need to train your brain to think in a more constructive way.
